Melanoid axolotls have a uniform dark coloration across their entire body, including their gills and belly. This distinguishes them from the wild-type axolotls, which have a dark back but a lighter-colored belly. Melanoid axolotls also have dark eyes, which adds to their mystic and captivating appearance.
Due to their dark coloration, melanoids can sometimes be mistaken for wild-type axolotls. They have a consistent dark (often black) coloration, unlike wild-types which have a lighter underside.
