Juvenile Masked Tree Frog – (Smilisca phaeota)

Smilisca phaeota, or Masked Tree Frog. This is a cross-banded tree frog from Central and South America. Smilisca is derived from the Greek word “smiliskos,” which means “little knife,” and refers to the generas’ sharp frontoparietal processes. Phaeota is derived from the Greek word “phaios,” which meaning ‘dark’ and presumably refers to the marks on the eyes.

Feeding In the wild, these frogs consume crickets, grasshoppers, spiders, and fly larvae. In captivity, they should be fed gutloaded crickets with a calcium/vitamin supplement to ensure they get all of the nutrition they require. Crickets can be fed with adequately sized dubias and a variety of different feeder worms.

At the time of sale, these frogs will be consuming three to four half-inch gutloaded crickets three times a week.
